How is a Tip Calculated?

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100). Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount. Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People.

Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax Tipping

Technically, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice, most people tip on the full post-tax amount — either is acceptable. The difference on a $50 bill is less than $2, so tip on whichever amount is easier.

Why Use a Tip Calculator?

Mental math at the end of a meal is stressful. This calculator removes the guesswork, ensures fairness when splitting, and lets you quickly explore different tip percentages to see the actual dollar difference.
