📖 HOW TO USE THE SPEED TEST

1
Close Background AppsPause downloads, streaming, and other bandwidth-heavy apps for accurate results.
2
Click the GO ButtonThe test auto-runs ping detection, then download measurement, then upload — in sequence.
3
Watch Real-Time GraphSee your speed fluctuate live on the graph. Consistent lines = stable connection.
4
Check Your Grade & ISP InfoYour connection gets graded A–F. ISP, IP, DNS time and more are auto-detected.
5
Share or CompareCopy results, share on social media, or run again at different times to compare.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How accurate is this speed test?
This tool performs real HTTP data transfers to and from CDN servers to measure actual throughput. Results are typically accurate within 5–10% of your true connection speed. For best accuracy, close other tabs, pause downloads, and connect via Ethernet instead of WiFi.
Why is my speed lower than what my ISP advertises?
ISP speeds are "up to" values measured under ideal conditions. Real-world speeds are affected by: WiFi signal strength, router hardware, distance from exchange, network congestion (especially evenings), number of devices sharing your connection, and whether your device supports the plan's maximum speed.
What is ping and why does it matter?
Ping (latency) is the time in milliseconds for data to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower is better. For gaming: under 20ms is excellent, 20–50ms is good, 50–100ms is playable. For video calls, under 150ms is acceptable. High ping causes lag, buffering, and delayed responses.
What is jitter and what causes it?
Jitter is the variation in ping times between packets. Consistent 30ms ping is better than ping fluctuating between 10ms and 80ms. High jitter causes choppy audio/video calls, lag spikes in gaming, and buffering. Causes include WiFi interference, network congestion, and poor ISP routing.
What download speed do I need?
Basic browsing/email: 5 Mbps. HD streaming (1080p): 10–15 Mbps. 4K streaming: 25 Mbps. Online gaming: 10–25 Mbps. Video calls (HD): 10 Mbps. Work from home: 25–50 Mbps. Household with multiple users/devices: 100 Mbps+. Fiber gigabit: overkill for most but future-proof.
Does using a VPN affect speed test results?
Yes, significantly. VPNs add encryption overhead and route traffic through remote servers, which increases ping and reduces download/upload speeds by 10–50% depending on VPN quality and server distance. To test your real ISP speed, disconnect from VPN first.
Why run the test multiple times?
Internet speeds fluctuate throughout the day based on network congestion. Run tests at different times: morning, afternoon, and evening. Evenings typically show lower speeds due to peak usage. Multiple readings give a more accurate picture of your actual connection quality.
What does the connection grade mean?
The grade (A–F) is calculated from a weighted combination of your download speed, upload speed, ping, and jitter. Grade A = excellent connection suitable for all tasks. B = good, suitable for most uses. C = average, may struggle with 4K or heavy gaming. D = below average. F = poor, basic browsing only.

💡 TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR INTERNET SPEED

📶
Use EthernetWired connections are faster and more stable than WiFi. Use Cat6 cable for gigabit speeds.
📍
Router PositionPlace router centrally, elevated, away from walls. Avoid microwaves and cordless phones nearby.
🔄
Restart RouterUnplug for 30 seconds monthly. Clears memory and refreshes ISP connection.
📡
Use 5GHz Band5GHz WiFi is faster but shorter range. Use for nearby devices, 2.4GHz for distant ones.
🛡️
Change DNSSwitch to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) DNS for faster browsing and lower ping.
💻
Update FirmwareKeep router firmware updated. New firmware often includes performance improvements.
📱
Limit DevicesDisconnect unused devices. Smart TVs, IoT devices constantly use background bandwidth.
Off-Peak HoursDownload large files early morning when network congestion is lowest.

📡 ABOUT THIS SPEED TEST

TheAshNow Internet Speed Test is a professional-grade, browser-based network diagnostic tool that measures your real internet connection performance. Unlike other speed tests that use Flash or proprietary plugins, our tool works entirely in your browser using modern Web APIs.

How We Measure Speed

Download speed is measured by fetching data from fast CDN endpoints and calculating transfer rate over time. Upload speed is measured by sending data payloads via HTTP POST. Ping is measured using multiple fetch requests to calculate round-trip time. Jitter is the standard deviation of ping samples. Packet loss is estimated from failed requests during the test.

Privacy & Security

Your IP address is only used to display location information. We do not store your test results on our servers. All test history is saved locally in your browser. We never sell or share your data with third parties.

What Makes a Good Connection?

For most households in India, a 100 Mbps fiber connection with ping under 15ms is excellent. In the USA, gigabit fiber is increasingly common. 5G mobile internet can deliver 300–1000 Mbps but with higher latency. Satellite internet (Starlink) offers 50–250 Mbps but with 20–50ms ping. Understanding your numbers helps you make better decisions about your internet plan.
