About This GPA Calculator

TheAshNow GPA Calculator is built for US students — high school, undergraduate, and graduate. All calculations run instantly in your browser. Zero data is sent to any server.

GPA Formula (USA 4.0 Scale)

GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours). Each letter grade maps to a grade point value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0), with plus/minus adjustments of ±0.3.

Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA

Semester GPA measures your performance in one term. Cumulative GPA is the weighted average across all completed credit hours. Graduate schools and employers typically evaluate your cumulative GPA.

Weighted vs Unweighted GPA

High schools sometimes use weighted GPAs (above 4.0) for AP, IB, or honors courses. Colleges use unweighted 4.0 scale GPAs. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

What GPA Do You Need?

Most US universities require 2.0 to stay enrolled. Dean's List requires 3.5+. Competitive graduate programs (law, medicine, MBA) typically want 3.5–3.8+. Scholarships often require 3.0 or higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points. Add all quality points, divide by total credits.
3.5+ is excellent (Dean's List territory). 3.0–3.49 is good. 2.5–2.99 is average. Below 2.0 risks academic probation. For grad school, aim for 3.5+.
A+ = 4.0 (some schools use 4.3), A = 4.0, A- = 3.7. B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7. C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7. D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7. F = 0.0.
The fewer credits you have completed, the easier it is to raise your GPA. Use the What-If tab to see exactly how many credits at what grade you need to hit your target.
Summa Cum Laude is typically 3.9–4.0. Magna Cum Laude is 3.7–3.89. Cum Laude is 3.5–3.69. Requirements vary by school.
Yes! Graduate school GPA uses the same 4.0 scale. Enter your graduate courses, credits, and grades in the Semester GPA tab for instant results.
This uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. For weighted GPA (AP/honors with 5.0 scale), simply enter the weighted grade points manually in the credits field as quality points.
